People under eighteen (18) years of age are not eligible to use our website (the “site”) and downloadable applications (the “application”) (collectively, “handshake services”).


About handshake and information we collect

We collect personal information on our members when you register for the service. When you download and install the mobile application, you agree to share your details and location with handshake on a continuous and/or periodic basis. Your details and location may be transmitted off your mobile device when the application is closed. When you visit the site, your location may be abstracted from the mobile web browser. You may also choose on some mobile phones to enter your location manually into the site. Handshake will never share your exact location with any other user. We don’t share your email address, mobile phone number, passwords or account information with any other user under any circumstances.

In the course of using handshake‘s services, we automatically track certain information such as your IP addresses and email address. Many other sites automatically collect this information.

If you send us personal emails or if other users or third parties send us correspondence about your activities or postings on the site, we may collect such information into a file which is only accessed by authorised personnel. We may also collect other user’s comments about you in our complaints department.

Handshake does not guarantee or accept liability for data or security of any information users transmit or receive through the site.


Our use of your information

We internally use personal identifiable information of our members to improve our marketing efforts, to statistically analyse our services and usage, to improve our content and product offerings, and to customise content and layout.

We may also send account updates, periodic informational updates or marketing messages to our members via the site, email, or by native messaging capabilities of your device. You may choose at any time to remove yourself from receiving such messages by changing the preferences in your account settings.

We use personally identifiable information to resolve disputes, troubleshoot problems and enforce our terms of service.


Our sharing of your information

We DO NOT share, sell or rent any personally identifiable information about you. In the future, we may disclose information in the aggregate to advertisers and for other marketing and promotional purposes. However, in these situations, we DO NOT disclose to these entities any information that could be used to personally identify you.

Handshake intends to co-operate with all law enforcement inquiries.

We reserve the right to disclose your personally identifiable information as required by law and when we believe that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights and/or to comply with a judicial proceeding, court order, or legal process.


Your use of other users’ information

You may not use other user’s information for commercial purposes, to spam, harass or to make unlawful threats. Handshake reserves the right to terminate accounts of those who misuse other user’s information, or who otherwise violate our terms of service.


Credit card security

We work diligently to protect the security of your personal information, including credit card details. We protect your credit card information during transmission by using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol, which encrypts your data when transmitted over the Internet. Handshake does not hold your credit card information, it is held securely by an authorised payment gateway service called DPS Payment Express NZ. To read their policy go to www.paymentexpress.com

When topping up your account by credit card, you have the option available to “save this card for next time”. If you choose this option, your credit card details are encrypted and securely retained.


Control of your password

You may not disclose your password to any third parties or share it with any third parties. If, despite the foregoing, you lose control of your password, you may lose substantial control over your personally identifiable information and may be subject to legally binding actions taken on your behalf. Therefore, if your password has been compromised for any reason, you should immediately change your password.


Use of cookies

Handshake uses cookies to store website visitor preferences and to record session information.  This is for the purpose of including and ensuring that visitors are not repeatedly getting the same advertisements and are not customising your browser, newsletter, advertising and user profile information. You may be able to configure your browser to accept or reject all or some cookies, or notify you when a cookie is set.


Reviewing and changing your personal information

Once you register and choose a username this cannot be changed. You are able to update and change most of your personally identifiable information, including your email, mobile number, city, region, post code, password and profile settings. All users have the right to access and correct any personal information (Privacy Act 1993). Please promptly update your information if it changes by logging into your account settings. We strongly urge you to periodically change your password to help reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your account information. Upon your request, we will remove your credit card billing information from your account. To make this request, contact us through our helpdesk  .We may retain in our database information to resolve disputes, troubleshoot problems, comply with credit card banking and association agreements, enhance security, reduce fraud, comply with NZ law and to enforce our terms of service agreement. We may use third-party advertising companies to serve adverts on our behalf. These companies may employ cookies and action tags (also known as single pixel gifs or web beacons) to measure advertising effectiveness. If and when we do this, we’ll revise this privacy policy and provide more information about this practice and your choices regarding it.
